Solutions to decarbonize our energy supply and economy at large are numerous. They include phasing out the use of fossil fuels, capturing and storing CO 2 before it reaches the atmosphere, capturing, and storing CO 2 already in the atmosphere, improving energy efficiency and avoiding wasting energy. Decarbonization also requires switching to low carbon energy supply such as renewable energy and nuclear power. All these solutions have a role to play, and the proportion of each type of energy is dependent on local conditions (no one solution fits all). It is also crucial that the economic, social, and environmental impacts of each of these solutions are analyzed from a life cycle perspective to avoid that solutions of today become the issues of tomorrow. Natural solutions such as planting trees and restoring ecosystems have a fundamental role to play and massive investment in those solutions are urgently needed. Finally, implementing circular economy, promoting sufficiency and adopting a new lifestyle (low carbon mobility, less meat diet, less consumption, etc.) have a critical role to play. (2024-01-01)
