Punctastriata lancettula (Schumann) P.B.Hamilton & Siver (Figures 85–99) Description:––Frustules in girdle view rectangular to almost clavate. Valves clearly heteropolar, usually with an inflated, almost elliptical central apart (e.g. Figs 86, 87, 91)and protracted head and foot poles. Head poles usually broader than foot poles. Valve dimensions (n=15): length 10–16 µm, width 4.5–6 µm. Sternum narrow, linear to linearlanceolate, zig zag in shape. Striae almost parallel to weakly radiate throughout, ca 12 in 10 µm. Ecology and associated diatom flora of the Delogne sample:–– Punctastriata davidwilliamsii was abundantly present in the investigated sample from Frahan. The entire sample was dominated by several small-celled araphid species such as Staurosira construens Ehrenberg (1843: 424), S. pinnata Ehrenberg (1843: 424), S. cf. venter (Ehrenberg 1854, plate XIV [14], fig. 50) Grunow (1882: 139), Pseudostaurosira brevistriata (Grunow in Van Heurck 1881: plate 45, figs 31–34) D.M. Williams & Round (1988: 276), together with Cocconeis lineata Ehrenberg (1849: 301), Navicula capitatoradiata H.Germain (ex Gasse 1986: 86), Reimeria sinuata (W. Gregory 1856: 4) Kociolek & Stoermer (1987: 457), Grunowia tabellaria (Grunow 1862: 548) Rabenhorst (1864: 146), Epithemia adnata (Kützing 1833: 544) Brébisson (1838: 16), and Nitzschia fonticola (Grunow in Cleve & Möller 1880: 97) Grunow (in Van Heurck 1881: plate 69, figs 15–20). According to Lange-Bertalot et al. (2017) this species composition may reflect higher electrolyte contents and moderate nutrient levels. The presence of Epithemia and Cocconeis most likely points to the presence of aquatic plants. (2025-11-04)
