Humidophila vandevijveri Kochman-Kędziora & C.E.Wetzel 2025 sp. nov. (Figs 1–18) LM observations (Figs 1–12): — Frustules rectangular in girdle view. Valves linear with slightly swollen valve center and apices. Length 9.0–20.0 µm, width 2.5–3.5 µm (n=20).Axial area narrow and linear. Central area rounded, bordered by shortened striae. Raphe straight, filiform with a varied location of terminal raphe endings, depending on valve size. Striae parallel, slightly radiate at the valve center, visible in light microscopy, 30–32 in 10 µm. SEM observations (Figs 13–18): — Striae parallel throughout the valve, slightly radiate in the middle part of the valve (Figs 13–14). Central area flat, occasionally with small, shallow depressions (1 or 2), not visible in LM (Figs 14, 16). Striae composed of transapically elongated areolae, externally not occluded, located in depressions (Figs 13–16). Irregular siliceous warty outgrowths present in the areolae (Fig. 16). Raphe straight, filiform with simple central and terminal raphe endings. The distance from the terminal raphe endings to apices increases with cell size. In smaller valves terminal raphe endings reach the last striae (Fig. 17), whereas in larger valves terminal raphe endings finish up to four striae before valve apices (Fig. 13). Irregularly formed silica outgrowths present on the valve face, between areolae and valve margins, surrounding the valve (Figs 13, 15–16), but in some specimens not observed (Fig. 14). A single row of elongated pores present on the valve mantle, not interrupted near the apices (Fig. 15). Internally, raphe branches straight with weakly T-shaped central raphe endings. Terminal raphe endings terminating onto small, weakly developed helictoglossae. Slit-like areolae, occluded by hymens, shortened in the round central area (Fig. 18). Holotype:— Slide no. Registration:— http://phycobank.org/ 105998 Etymology:— The specific epithet ‘ vandevijveri ’ is given in honour of colleague and dear friend Dr. Bart Van de Vijver (Meise Botanic Garden, Belgium) for his great contribution to morphology, taxonomy and biogeography of diatoms. Distribution:— So far only observed from the type locality. Associated diatom flora:— The diatom flora associated with this site is distinctive, characterized by endemic elements initially documented by Hustedt (1937) and visually represented by Simonsen (1987, and plates therein). Specifically, the flora includes Achnanthes lanceolata var. robusta Hustedt (1937: 202; pl. 13, figs 47–49) and several small, as-yet-unidentified „sellaphoroid” species currently under study. The sample also contained Humidophila aff. irata (Krasske) Lowe & al. 2014: 358 (sensu Lange-Bertalot & Werum 2001, figs 41–46). (2025-10-29)
