Viticulture in Montenegro is a sector of major economic, social, and cultural significance. It combines a long- standing heritage with an expanding role in international markets. Yet, the sector is increasingly vulnerable to climate change: rising temperatures, reduced rainfall, and more frequent extreme events directly affect productivity and quality, putting long-term sustainability at risk. The MONTEVITIS project was established to address these challenges by reinforcing Montenegro’s research and innovation capacity and promoting the adoption of advanced scientific and technological solutions. Through collaboration between universities, research centres, wineries, and institutions, it develops modelling tools, IoT- based monitoring systems, precision agriculture practices, and training activities, while supporting the valorisation of indigenous grape varieties and Montenegro’s integration into the European research area. This document highlights the dual reality of the sector: its socio-economic importance for rural communities and national development, and its exposure to risks under projected climate scenarios. Within this framework, strategies are considered at two complementary levels. One dimension focuses on helping vineyards cope with changing environmental conditions, safeguarding yield and quality despite increasing climatic variability. This requires the implementation of adaptation strategies, which consist of adjustments to the vineyard management, such as pruning, irrigation, or the choice of appropriate varieties and rootstocks, all aimed at maintaining resilience and productivity. At the same time, it is essential to reduce the sector’s contribution to climate change while improving environmental performance. This involves mitigation strategies that lower greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen soil and canopy management, and foster carbon sequestration, thereby aligning viticulture with sustainability and climate objectives. Through these combined actions, MONTEVITIS is expected to enhance resilience and safeguard genetic and viticultural heritage. Concurrently, there is an expectation that they will enhance international competitiveness and align Montenegro more closely with European priorities on sustainability and ecological transition, ensuring that climate change challenges are addressed through innovation and sustainable growth.
